Euro 2012: Player Ratings | Top 10 Players

Top 10 Most Outstanding Players from Euro 2012.

A list of the top 10 extraordinary gentlemen who made football their bitch in this Euro 2012.

1) Andrea Pirlo

Starting off at the top spot is the Italian legend Andrea Pirlo. At 33, the talismanic midfielder has thoroughly enjoyed the Euro. He has been the king in the midfield, the Germans and English would testify to that. Pirlo had a tremendous season with Juventus as well, where they won the Serie A without losing any match. So naturally he has got the form in the euro as well.

Player Rating – Awesome

2) Mario Balotelli

Love him or hate him. Super Mario is like a breath of fresh air in Football. Scoring goals, Mario Balotelli has come of age at this Euro. May be not, but, he destroyed Germany. Definitely the best striker of the tournament.

Player Rating – Very Good

3) Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil was as good as Andrea Pirlo, just not against him which probably caused Germany’s downfall in the semi final of Euro 2012. Ozil, like Pirlo, also continued the impressive form which he enjoyed at Real Madrid this season. And with the likes of club mate Sami Khedira, Ozil created chances and kept possession at will.

Player Rating – Very Good

4) Xabi Alonso

Special tournament for Xabi Alonso, as the former Liverpool midfielder completed his 100th international match for Spain. Xabi Alonso has been the backbone of every side he has played for, at both club and country level. And he scores goals too.  Tremendous season with Real Madrid also helped.

Player Rating – Awesome

5) David Silva

Manchester City winger David Silva looked threatening the entire tournament. Its hard enough to shine against the likes Iniesta, Xavi, Alonso and Fabregas but Silva managed it with ease. David Silva was the most creative of Spanish player going forward.

Player Rating – Very Good

6) Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard tried hard but couldn’t save England form their impending doom. They went back to the stone age way of playing in the quarter finals against Italy and then eventually lost in the penalties. The Liverpool legend was the sole inspiration in the England side. All of his passes were quality. Period.

Player Rating – Very Good

7) Joao Moutinho

Moutinho has been like a mini revelation for Portugal. The Porto man showed some fierce tackles and some superb techniques and was instrumental for all of Portugal’s successes. One of the best attacking midfielders in the making.

Player Rating – Very Good

8) Andriy Yarmolenko

Yarmolenko has been the player of the tournament for Ukraine in this Euro. Andriy Yarmolenko plays his club football at Dynamo Kyiv. He made quite a few energetic runs from the right flank in this tournament. His stature in Europe was already growing and with current performances, is bound to shoot up.

Player Rating – Good

9) Alan Dzagoev

Alan Dzagoev played  3 matches and scored three goals. The CSKA Moscow attacking midfielder also looks like one of the new promising players coming from Russia.

Player Rating – Good

10) Federico Balzaretti

Federico Balzaretti came in to Italian squad to replace Criscito, who had to withdraw unfortunately. But Balzaretti has more than just filled the void, he could very well be the best left back of Euro 2012. All solid performances specially going forward.

Player Rating – Very Good

Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland will face off against Croatia in this Group C fixture in Poland. A win in this fixture is a must, if any of the two countries have to move forward in the tournament.

Luka Modric will be the main man for Croatia, handling the midfield. The play-maker will have Jelavic up front, the Everton has been superb form in the English Premier League.

For Ireland, Robbie Keane will be upfront and would probably score as he generally does.

Spain might be forced to opt for their third choice right back as Alvaro Arbeloa missed training earlier at Gdansk. This may force Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque to chose Juanfran, who has only made one appearance for the La Roja before.

Italy also would have a surprise at the back as Danielle De Rossi has been practicing at the training as center back and the Italians might for 3 man defence with wing backs employed. Cesare Prandelli will hope that the presence of Andrea Pirlo will calm things down for them against the frantic Spain side.

Overall, the Spaniards would be the favorites but the tournament has already seen an upset with Denmark winning against Netherlands and a makeshift Spain defence is bound to be fragile.
