The Netherlands’ shocking international run continued, as they lost the first match of the international break 1-2 to Greece at home. The Dutch had failed to qualify for the 2016 Euros, and it seems the same woeful performances have continued.
Liverpool man Gini Wijnaldum was the lone goalscorer for the Dutch. It was the 25-year olds 7th goal for his country. However, it wasn’t a goal for the ages; it was just incredibly lucky.
The goal came just 14 minutes into the match as Spurs’ new signing Vincent Janssen received a through ball in the box, and after some excellent work at the by-line, threaded the ball towards the Liverpool man in the middle.
The ball was part kicked, part bundled and part deflected into the goal from 3 yards out.
The lead lasted only for the next 15 minutes for the Dutch, as Kostas Mitroglou scored from a header to make it 1-1 for Greece. Giannis Gianniotas struck the match winner with 15 minutes to go. Thus humbling the Dutch in their own turf.
The Kop faithful would hope that their new signing will be carrying this type of form into the League. The experienced Dutchman was signed by Klopp to be an explosive box-to-box midfielder who can be the foil to more attacking players, and contribute goals from midfield. Wijnaldum was the top scorer for Newcastle last season, and he has vowed to hit double digits again this season for his new club.
