Moussa Dembele scored a hat-trick as Celtic humbled Rangers 5-1 in the first Old Firm league derby in 4 years last Saturday. Celtic were without their talismanic striker Leigh Griffiths, who was ruled out of the match due to a ham-string injury.
Rodgers placed the formidable task of leading the frontline on the shoulders of young striker Moussa Dembele. And the youngster more than justified the decision by producing a class display, becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in the Old Firm derby in 50 years. Scott Sincliar and Armstrong each shared a goal apiece as Celtic inflicted a crushing defeat on their long time rivals.
During the post-match interview, Rodgers while praising the youngster was quick to stress on the collective effort of the team. Despite expressing his satisfaction with his team’s performance, Rodgers seemed visibly riled when the Sky reporter brought up the question of ‘Leigh who?’, referring to injured striker Leigh Griffiths.
Rodgers apparently went about reprimanding the reporter accentuating the striker’s contributions to the club.
Griffiths plus the entire Celtic team will surely have been pleased to see their manager jump to such a resolute defence of his players.
