Liverpool v Man Utd – Referee Anthony Taylor had an absolute shocker back in January (Video)

Ahead of the build up to the Manchester United-Liverpool derby, the announcement of Anthony Taylor as the referee to officiate the match has been met with scepticism and disapproval from a wide section of fans.

The Englishman hails just 6 miles off Old Trafford and had his fair share of controversy most recently involving a match between Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday in January.

With Leeds United trailing 2-0, Liam Cooper looked set to have given Leeds hope of a comeback with a goal from Alex Mowatt’s free-kick. Referee Taylor however disallowed the goal deeming Wednesday had not completed a substitution despite blowing for the free-kick to be taken earlier.

The decision sparked a controversy with then Leeds boss Steve Evans even going to the extent of claiming that the referee should be demoted to under-nines football.

While the outrage surrounding his decision at Sheffield may have subsided, the Englishman cannot afford to deliver such officiating in a game of magnitude of big as the Liverpool-Manchester United

  1. Yes, referees make mistakes. Who knew? The point our Merseyside drama queens are getting upset about is that they fear they might not get their customary penalty and an opponent sent off. They needn’t worry. This ref will be under so much pressure to demonstrate an absence from f any bias that it is far more likely to go Liverpools way. Yes, even more than usual.
