Manchester United came equipped with earplugs to Anfield, as they produced a sturdy performance to keep Liverpool’s heavy metal football at bay. Liverpool’s famed pressing style was countered by a classic Mourinho tactic, a counter-press based on organization and disciplined from an athletic and energetic United side.
But as the match went on, United found it getting harder to keep the Liverpool attack at bay. The introduction of Adam Lallana brought in some much needed drive in the Reds’ midfield, and United found themselves pushed on to the back foot even more.
But United held on, and they had their defence – particularly the energy and pace of Antonio Valencia and the resolute shot-stopping of De Gea t thank for.
In one such Liverpool attack, Roberto Firmino seemed through to score, racing into the box with the ball at his feet. Enters, Antonio Valencia.
The Ecuadorian chased the Brazilian, and just when the Firmino looked to bury the ball, Valencia planted in a fearless, perfect slide tackle from behind, cleanly clearing the ball away from the Liverpool man.
It was perhaps, the most important tackle of the match, and the Red Devils can definitely thank Valencia for the point they have escaped with.
