Despite Chelsea dropping points to Liverpool and opening up a chance for Spurs to make life difficult for their rivals at the top, the North London side were unable to take advantage. They were held to a tepid 0-0 draw by relegation fodders Sunderland, who would undoubtedly be extremely happy to have take a point from Spurs.
It is easy to blame Spurs for dropping points in this case, but it has to be admitted that Sunderland absolutely did not make it easy for them. The Black Cats came with the determination to grind out a result any way they could, and this included taking some extreme measures when necessary.
One such instance was when Mousa Dembele, arguably one of the Premier League’s best ball-carrying midfielders, was going on one of his trademark runs.
Rather than attempt to steal the ball, Jack Rodwell launched into the Belgian with an extremely cynical tackle from behind, one that could have easily caused long-term damage.
