Gini Wijnaldum’s acquisition from Newcastle at the start of the season for a whopping 23 million pounds raised a lot of eyebrows. Questions were asked whether Liverpool needed a player like him. But slowly and surely, the Dutch International has been winning over supporters consistently with his play and contributions.
Having scored 3 league goals and provided 4 assists in 20 games this season, Wijnaldum has become an integral part of the Reds’ midfield, playing alongside the likes of Henderson and Lallana. He scored the only goal of the game against Man City last year, and his fabulous header helped Liverpool salvage a draw against Chelsea last month.
So it came as no surprise when the Liverpool No. 5 decided to up the tempo during Liverpool’s win against Spurs last night. Sadio Mane had already put the Reds ahead by two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the game. But that didn’t mean Liverpool slacked down on their attack, and nothing visualised this strategy more than the sublime backheel pass by Wijnaldum in the 38th minute.
Latching on to a loose ball from Adam Lallana, the Feyenoord youth product delivered a wonderful backheel to set the English midfielder up for another attack on Spurs goal. Watch the pass below:
