Newcastle United maintained a slim one point lead at the top of the Championship with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa. The win was a bittersweet one for the St. James Park faithful; whilst the result saw them remain atop the table, Championship top scorer Dwight Gayle was withdrawn with an injury.
Nevertheless, the boisterous home fans were in fine form as they saw their team pick up yet another victory, a victory that brings them one step closer to achieving promotion to the Premier League again. Perhaps the fans’ finest moment came when the scorer of their second goal was announced.
The second goal was an own goal by Henri Lansbury, a player widely derided due to his penchant for diving and playacting whenever possible. When it was announced over speakers that the goal was credited to him, Toon fans broke out into raucous cheers and applause.
