Manchester United progressed to the last sixteen of the Europa League after a 4-0 aggregate win over St. Etienne. Having a 3 goal lead going into the game thanks to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick in the first leg, the onus was on the French club to force the issue but United’s 1-0 win was enough to get the job done.
Whilst the win seems comfortable in retrospect, United weren’t complacent during the game. They were largely disciplined and figuratively put the ball in St. Etienne’s court, forcing them to break them down. The win wasn’t flashy, but it was a hard-working performance nonetheless.
One such instance came early in the game from the unlikeliest of sources in Michael Carrick. The aging midfielder has been in fine form this season, but showed a burst of pace many didn’t know he possessed whilst tracking back in order to prevent a potential counterattack by the opposition.
