Newcastle’s 2-1 win over nearest title challengers Brighton in midweek was one that showcased what the side are made of. Brighton had been turning up the pressure on them at the top of the table, so a win was necessary. Eventually they managed to pull it off, if only by the skin of their teeth.
The equalising goal, scored by Mohamed Diame, was a goal that really set social media ablaze. A long range strike that was incredibly good or incredibly lucky depending on whom you asked, it nevertheless was a sight to behold and it was the catalyst to their eventual comeback.
Interestingly, the goal has had some rather far-ranging ramifications, particularly on the training ground. During training, it isn’t uncommon for a few unconventional or even flukey goals to be scored. After the Brighton game, any fluke goals scored by Newcastle players during training have been given a unique name.
