Marouane Fellaini coming on to replace Paul Pogba in a game would usually met with a mixed response at best from Manchester United fans.
With the 90 million pound man going down to injury, that’s exactly what happened as the second half of United’s home leg against FC Rostov began at Old Trafford.
The home fans would have been concerned over the extent of Pogba’s injury, added to the uncertainty of Fellaini’s mercurial nature. But the big blonde Belgian exceeded expectations with a strong display as United edged out the Russian club by a single goal to proceed to the Quarter-finals of the Europa League.
The ex-Everton man has often been used as a battering ram whenever Jose Mourinho has chosen a more direct approach with mixed results, but Fellaini proved that he had more strings to his bow than his knock-on game. Supporters on social media got behind the midfielder and lauded his showing on what proved to be a tougher night than expected for United.
While some of the praise may have bordered on mischievous hyperbole, Fellaini did enough to win over fans who have been unconvinced by him in past months. Here’s to seeing more of the same from the big man.
