Sweet Feet Jones
When Phil Jones first started at Manchester United, a few people actually thought that he would grow to become as revered a figure as Duncan Edwards, one of the Busby Babes whom even a legend like Sir Bobby Charlton declared was so good that he did not consider himself “fit to lace his boots”. Some praise.
Of course Jones did start well, but his career at Old Trafford has been hampered by injury and inconsistency as well as the odd defensive error. Now known more for the astonishingly awkward faces he pulls mid-match, Jones has gained some form under Jose Mourinho this season. And against FC Rostov in the Europa League, the English defender gave us a glimpse of his skills.
Playing as left win back in the second half, Jones took on and beat two opponents in a marauding left wing run including a great nutmeg on a diving marker who was left stranded. The move was so good, and frankly unexpected, that ex-American international Alexi Lalas could not contain himself on commentary, leading to a soundbite gone viral online.
While Jones’ defensive contribution enabled United to pick up a slender victory and progress to the quarter-finals, most fans would probably remember this hilarious reaction best. The only thing to round off the moment as perfect would have been a classic Phil Jones face.
