Newcastle United’s commitment towards building a reliable pool of young talent bore fruits one again, as the club’s U-23 squad beat West Ham on Saturday.
The two clubs had faced off in a league encounter at St. James’ Park on Monday last week, but while that ended in a dull 0-0 draw, this Premier League Cup game saw the Magpies secure a thrilling 3-2 victory.
The Hammers went into the break with a goal by Fletcher, but their lead was short-lived after Charman equalized for Newcastle.
Thanks to their captain, West Ham did manage to restore their lead soon and hoped to secure a win, but a young Toon winger clearly had other plans.
Newcastle’s Sammy Ameobi went on to equalize the game for his side by stylishly curling in a goal from 18 yards.
The 24 year-old snatched a win for Newcastle during injury time with a screamer from outside the box that placed the Magpies in the next round of the tournament.
