Everton defender Seamus Coleman unfortunately ended up with a horrific injury that will consign him to the treatment table for quite a long time.
The full-back was on the receiving end of a disgusting tackle by Neil Taylor in the 0-0 draw between the Republic of Ireland and Wales. The challenge resulted in a severely broken leg for the Irishman who had to be stretchered off the pitch.
As tributes poured in from well-wishers from all quarters, a picture of Coleman’s national team-mate Shane Long hugging the injured man as he lay on the pitch in agony has tugged at the heart-strings of supporters all over.
Long’s attempts to console Coleman, perhaps even shield him from seeing the extent of his injury, has been praised by social media as a gesture symbolic of team spirit and humanity – a truly touching image.
Fierce warriors for rival teams in the Premier League they may be, yet this was a reminder of how the heroes on the field are simply human too – they are just as prone to harm and heart-break as the rest of us.
Kudos to Long for his empathy, while we wish Seamus Coleman a speedy recovery and swift return to the game.
