Whoever is running Newcastle United’s social media deserves a pay rise

No one would want to be Keith Stroud at the moment. The referee had a moment he’d want to forget quickly during the game between Newcastle United and Burton Albion.

Stroud awarded a penalty to the Magpies in the 29th minute, which Matt Ritchie duly converted, only to rescind his decision after he adjudged that Dwight Gayle had encroached into the penalty area before the ball was struck.

Incredibly, he awarded Albion an indirect free-kick instead of allowing Newcastle the opportunity to retake the penalty which is standard practice.

The call was roundly criticized and stirred up great controversy. Stroud has since apologised and would probably have been relieved that the home side eventually sealed a victory after Ritchie scored the only goal of the game in the second half.

While the controversy rages on, the official Newcastle United FC account on Twitter opted to see the humorous side of things with a perfect pun.

Supporters online were asking for the person behind the post to be rewarded for his effort – nice to see a club avoid the ref bashing and look on the bright side of life.

  1. Burton Albion’s continued existence is an offence to the good name of the sport of association football. The sooner those cheating, diving, gouging, timewasting spunk trumpets are dispatched back to the fucking Conference, the better it’ll be for everyone.
