Liverpool today might have a squad that can take them to the Champions League next season, but they will always have one huge regret, according to Mark Lawrenson.
The former Reds defender turned football pundit claimed that the club once had an amazing opportunity to sign Tottenham star Dele Alli in his prime years, which they will forever regret not taking.
Alli was picked up by Tottenham Hotspur from his former club Milton Keynes Dons for a measly £5 million in 2015, which has now turned him into one of Europe’s most promising players two years later.
Lawrenson said Liverpool initially had a good chance to land the player, whose signing was eventually approved by three out of five members of Tottenham’s transfer committee.
Alli has grown from strength to strength under the guidance of Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, and is expected to win major team and individual accolades in his career.
Speaking on The Ref Show, this is what Lawrenson had to say –
He’s a player isn’t he? He’s one of those lucky lads who can be anything that he wants to be. But he also has got that little bit of edge about him.
He was going to Liverpool, you know? It was all done, absolutely all done – sorted. And Liverpool had change of heart the next day. They’re regretting it every single minute of every single day.
