For all of their reliance on the attacking trio of Coutinho, Firmino and Mane, Liverpool had for once to thank a defensive player in the mould of Emre Can for the crucial victory over Watford at the Vicarage Road on Monday.
The German arguably scored a contender for the goal of the season award superbly connecting overhead with a Lucas delivery from a corner to score the match defining goal in the tie.
Following the stupendous effort, Can invariably won rave reviews from the manager and fans alike. But while the importance of Can’s goal can’t be denied, Liverpool’s defence too played a pivotal role in ensuring the win with a clean sheet.
The Reds defense commitment and expertise in preserving their lead is best summed up by a video footage showing Liverpool’s two centrebacks running up the time by passing the ball between them; the impressive fact being that the duo were on the opposite sides on Watford’s penalty box!!
