After a very successful 2015-16 season finishing as the EFL Championship winners and gaining promotion to the Premier League, Newcastle will try their best to complete the comeback season to the PL in a mid table position.
Rafa Benitez definitely perceives that the problems he might face in Premier League will be very different to the issues he faced last season, and in order to overcome these tough situations, he will have to make strong signings.
It has not been a particularly productive transfer window for the Magpies, with Florian Lejuene being the only notable signing confirmed as of now.
With obvious doubt looming over Tim Krul’s future and Karl Darlow attracting interest from Middlesbrough, Rafa might think that the goalkeeping department may need a fresh pair of hands who can help Newcastle tackle the more attack minded style of play in the PL.
Although, the latest heroics of the club’s second choice keeper Rob Elliot in the club’s 2-1 win against Hearts in last night’s friendly will surely make the Spanish coach re-evaluate his thoughts.
Elliot was brilliant in goal and pulled of two absolutely world class instinctive saves in the space of a minute.
The Irish goalkeeper has been with The Magpies since 2011, but has been playing second fiddle to Tim Krul and Karl Darlow for majority of his Newcastle career.
Maybe this is his time to shine. Check out the saves below –
