Pic: APOEL fans using the UCL game v Tottenham to demand British Museum to return 500 BC sculpture

Cypriot side still reeling from British exploits

In one of the most creative methods of making the most of their opportunity, APOEL Nicosia supporters used the Champions League stage to demonstrate their claims of artefacts that date back to 500 BC.

The items in context here were the Elgin Marbles which are currently on display at the British Museum. Historical evidence suggests that a British representative by the name Lord Elgin acquired them from the then Ottoman Empire in early 1800’s. Originally a prized possession of the Parthenon in Athens, the ancient marbles are no closer to returning to Greece with the British Museum not entertaining any negotiations.

However, that didn’t put away the home side from mounting a banner to give the long standing dispute a satirical twist. Class this from the APOEL fans indeed.
