With intolerance and racism on the rise and becoming the new norm rather than a rarity, football is no exception to it either.
Hot on the heels of Colombian midfielder Edwin Cardona’s racist gesture towards South Korean players in a recent international friendly, another South Korean footballer, namely Heung-Min Son, found himself to be the latest in an ever growing list of victims of racial abuse.
A self-proclaimed West Ham United fan hurled racial abuse at the Tottenham winger while waiting at a traffic signal recently, and even proceeded to upload the video online, where it quickly faced brickbats from footy fans for its insensitivity and gall.
Such blatant bigotry has been growing steadily in the past few years, and no amount of criticism or sanction seems to stem the outflow, thereby leaving a black mark on a distinguished sport.
