World champions France were back at home for the first time since their summer heroics, as they took on the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League. The French managed to edge out the Dutch 2-1 courtesy of goals from Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud.
Mbappe was a constant menace for the Dutch defence throughout the game, as Didier Deschamps’ men effectively utilized the 19-year-old’s pace on the counter. In the 78th minute of the game, the teenager set off on a typical lung-bursting run from inside his own-half after being played through by Pogba.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Djik found himself in the unenviable position of being in a one-on-one situation against Mbappe, with a lot of space for the French forward to run onto.
While the situation certainly looked ominous, the 27-year-old defender ushered Mbappe away from goal and made a brilliant tackle just as the forward was lining up a shot.

Van Djik has received some rave reviews for his performances since joining Liverpool. He certainly proved his prowess again yesterday by dealing with Mbappe probably better than any of the defenders at the World Cup.
With Liverpool drawn in the same Champions League group as PSG, Van Djik will likely come up against Mbappe again in little over a week’s time. It will certainly be interesting to see how that battle plays out, but on yesterday’s showing round 1 certainly belonged to the Liverpool man.
