For all the impressive performances put in by Joe Gomez in the heart of Liverpool’s defence since the start of the campaign, Dejan Lovren showed exactly why he’s Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice centre-back to partner Van Dijk during the 0-0 stalemate against Manchester City at Anfield last night.

Having struggled to get into the first team since recovering from a pelvic injury, the World Cup finalist was surprisingly handed his first league start of the season by Jurgen Klopp as Gomez took over right-back duties from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It meant the renewal of last year’s much formidable centre-half partnership between Lovren and the leader of the pack Virgil van Dijk, and the pair went on to put in an outstanding shift by keeping City’s much vaunted attacking force at bay for most of the match.

While van Dijk was his usual imperious self except for the late penalty he conceded that was eventually skied by Riyad Mahrez, the Croatian put in some ferocious tackles to stop the visitors in their tracks.

In fact, a moment that’s got Liverpool fans going all crazy was when Lovren pulled off a sumptuous tackle on Gabriel Jesus to deny him the opportunity of going through on goal.
