It was an emotional return to Stamford Bridge for Frank Lampard, who watched from the touchline as his League One side Derby County gave Chelsea a real fright before going down 3-2 in the Carabao Cup match.
The former Blues midfielder enjoys legendary status at the club where he spent 13 years, scoring a remarkable 211 goals – their all time record – and playing a key role in numerous memorable triumphs.
Hence, it was no surprise to hear the 40-year-old’s name being sung at all corners of the ground even as his team ran Maurizio Sarri’s men close.
The visitors’ spirited performance was ample evidence that Lampard has what it takes to build a successful managerial career.
As the final whistle blew, the ex-England international and Sarri – a manager of the highest reputation – came together to shake hands, a moment that was brilliantly captured on camera.
Football heritage on display, this. Check out the epic picture of the two greats:
This defines happiness.
