Columnist on the official Chelsea website, Giles Smith, is quietly achieving a cult status with the Blues fans with his piece of writing.
Famous for his column ‘Thursday Thoughts’, the writer took the opportunity this week to display his wit with a funny description of rivals Manchester United, whom they had defeated in the FA Cup quarter finals at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.
One could be mistaken that Smith might be describing Stoke here, but, then came the hilarious reveal.
Manchester United fans look away. Check out the relevant bit from Smith’s column below!
Paul Pogba didn’t have the best of the starts to his new life at Manchester United. After arriving from Juventus for a world record fee last summer, he faced heavy criticism and doubt over his ability to justify the €105 million price tag.
Slowly but surely though, the Frenchman has been proving the doubters wrong. Pogba has now solidified his position in United’s midfield and is again playing at the same level which made the media tout him as the next “Greatest of All time.”
His supreme talents were on full display in United’s Europa League round of 32 match against St. Etienne last night. The Red Devils never needed to shift into the second gear during their 1-0 away win at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
Pogba was once again the dominant figure in midfield and yet again, he grabbed the headlines when in the 83rd minute of the game he produced an absolutely beautiful piece of skill.
The Frenchman bounced the ball on the ground before turning and watching it shoot over the head of his marker. Playground skills from Pogba, watch it below!
It would be safe to say that Radamel Falcao’s loan spell at Manchester United was a complete waste with United paying £6 million for the one year loan, and Falcao earned £265,000 per week. In return, the Colombian provided a return of just four goals in 29 appearances for the club that season.
Two years later, “El Tigre” is back to his best. Scoring 24 goals in 29 games across all competitions for AS Monaco, once again he is one of the leading goalscorers in Europe.
The Red Devils certainly don’t remember his time at the club very fondly because of obvious reasons, and even the player himself must have nightmarish memories of that year. He went through one of the worst forms of his career and was even demoted to the U-21 team.
But it looks like Falcao does not harbour any hard feelings towards the club or the fans as evident from the fact that he was seen signing a Man Utd shirt after landing in Manchester prior to the Champions League outing. Or it may be that he just wants to frustrate the Citizens by favouring their cross-town rivals.
Egypt has been providing the footballing world with some remarkable talents over the past couple of years. The likes of Mohammad Salah, Elneny and Ramadan Sobhi are all currently playing for some of the biggest clubs in world football. A new name that may soon join this list is Mahmoud Hassan, who is commonly known as “Trezeguet” after the famous French striker.
The 22-year-old was a part of the Egyptian team that finished as runner-ups in 2017’s AFCON. Currently playing for Excel Mouscron on loan from Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League, he has 4 goals and 4 assists in 19 appearances.
Predominantly a left winger, Mahmoud is blessed with explosive pace and stamina which was evident from the fact that he ran more than any other Egyptian player in the AFCON.
And according to the most reliable of Egyptian football sites, filgoal.com, Liverpool have emerged as the frontrunner in acquiring his services and have talked with the player’s representatives about the same.
The Merseyside outfit prefers to bring in young talent and shape them into future superstars, and Mahmoud seems to be their next potential target.
The Reds also have a pretty good experience in case of African nationals recently, with players like Sadio Mane and Joel Matip easily adapting to the pace and physicality of English football and becoming an integral part of the starting XI.
The 2015-16 season was a horror show for Newcastle United and even the high profile appointment of Rafa Benitez could not prevent them from being condemned to relegation.
But Benitez’s decision to continue managing Newcastle even in the Championship had an extremely positive effect on the mood in the stands.
His decision to stick with the Magpies in the second tier and then his subsequent success, with the Toons on course to gain automatic promotion and within a good chance to win the championship this season, has elevated him to a cult hero status amongst the Newcastle fans.
And hence, in an epic show of respect, Newcastle fans have planned to unfurl a massive flag of the manager during the Aston Villa game tonight.
This initiative was taken by Gallowgate Flags, a Newcastle United fans movement to rebuilt a special atmosphere in St. James Park, and show support to their team through visually stunning displays.
Newcastle United player on loan at Marseille from the start of 2016, winger Florian Thauvin has started to really impress with his play this season. With 7 goals, 3 assists and 5 Man of the Match performances in 26 appearances, Thauvin’s stock seems to be on the rise.
Thauvin has become an integral part of this Marseille side chasing European football next season, and the Frenchman put yet another impressive display last night.
In the 63rd minute of the game, after collecting a back pass from Morgan Sanson, the Newcastle loanee let out an absolute screamer from 20 yards out to seal the victory for his side.
Statistically the most creative player in France this season, check out Thauvin’s goal below!
The lengthy break in Liverpool’s schedule has allowed Jurgen Klopp to utilise it as a “mini pre-season”. Klopp and his team are undergoing a training camp in the Spanish seaside strip of La Manga before their next match on 27th February. The warm weather training camp is the perfect opportunity to refresh the players and restore confidence in the team.
With the impressive victory against Spurs, Liverpool halted their downward spiral after an impressive first half of the season. A player whose importance can not be stated enough in this campaign is new signing Sadio Mane.
The Senegalese is the frontrunner for Liverpool’s ‘Player of the Year’ in his first season and seems to be enjoying every bit of it.
Maybe even too much as Mane tried to sneak into the winning team’s photoshoot after a friendly inter-squad match at La Manga. James Milner and the rest of his 5-a-side were having none of it though.
England manager Gareth Southgate was spotted at Chelsea’s training ground at Cobham yesterday. The Englishman was warmly greeted by Conte, whose side were preparing for the FA cup challenge against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Southgate himself is gearing up for a tough challenge against Germany next month, and he apparently showed a lot of interest in defensive midfielder Nathaniel Chabolah.
Chabolah has played under Southgate eariler, during the latter’s tenure as England U-21 manager. Southgate greeted Chabolah with a warm handshake, raising speculation about the 22 year old’s possible inclusion in the England’s squad.
The England Manager may also have received some tips from Conte, who is very well aware of the challenges that managing an International side brings from his tenure as Italy’s manager.
Southgate will be keen to know how to overturn the fortunes of a talented yet underperforming side, something in which Conte has an expertise.
On a crazy night at Carrow Road, Newcastle United were only able to snatch a point as a resilient and lucky Norwich City side held on to a 2-2 draw. Still, it was enough to keep the Toon atop the standings by a slight margin of one point.
Newcastle made a flying start to the game by getting the lead in the very first minute, but two quick goals by Norwich meant that they trailed the fixture for most of the duration.
The Magpies threw everything they had on Norwich’s goal, but couldn’t get the equaliser they were seeking desperately. Only in the 81st minute, on an Ayoze Perez cross, club captain Jamaal Lascelles hit an amazing volley on the back post to snatch the all important point for his team.
The 23-year-old’s stock rose due to his solid performances last year, and he was aptly awarded by being named the club captain this season. Jamaal Lascelles has been one of the most dependable defenders for Newcastle, and his stunning effort goes on to show his indispensability for this Newcastle United side chasing Premier League football next season.
After a horrendous start to the year, it looks like things are getting back on track for Klopp’s boys after the victory against Spurs on the weekend.
Their next fixture is after 2 weeks, and so the squad members are having a mini vacation of sorts before returning back to training. Philippe Coutinho, the Liverpool No. 10, was recently spotted in the beautiful city of Milan, probably to celebrate Valentine’s day with his wife Aine Coutinho.
Coutinho, who started his senior career with Inter, struggled to gain first team action with the San Siro outfit. He was later brought by Liverpool in 2013, where he subsequently became a star.
But having spent some time in the fashion capital, the Brazilian is very much aware of its beauty and took some time out of his busy schedule to explore the glorious old city with his wife before returning to training.
