Twenty20 International Records: Best Bowling Figures in an Innings

The ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012 in Sri Lanka has already seen some fine bowling efforts. Previous T20I bowling records have been smashed, and new ones created. In this post, we take a look at a crucial T20I Record – Best Bowling Figures in an Innings.

Prior to the start of this tournament, the record for the Best Figures in an Innings was held by Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka. However, on the very first day, that record was broken. More interestingly though, the name of the record holder didn’t change. Mendis bettered his own record when he returned figures of 4-2-8-6 against Zimbabwe.

Yesterday, ace Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh who has been out in the cold for over an year made a masterly comeback to Team India destroying England with his spell of 4 for 13. That created a new India record for the best bowling in Twenty20 Internationals. However, that was still not good enough to find Bhajji a place in the Top 10 List for this record.

List of the 10 Best Bowling Figures in a Twenty20 International Match

Bowler Match Figures Date Venue
Ajantha Mendis Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe 4-2-8-6 18-Sep-12 Hambantota
Ajantha Mendis Sri Lanka vs Australia 4-1-16-6 8-Aug-11 Pallekele
Umar Gul Pakistan vs New Zealand 3-0-6-5 13-Jun-09 Kennington Oval
Elias Sunny Bangladesh vs Ireland 4-1-13-5 18-Jul-12 Belfast
Tim Southee New Zealand vs Pakistan 4-1-18-5 26-Dec-10 Auckland
Ryan McLaren South Africa vs West Indies 3.5-0-19-5 19-May-10 North Sound
Nehemiah Odhiambo Kenya vs Scotland 4-0-20-5 4-Feb-10 Nairobi
Darren Sammy West Indies vs Zimbabwe 3.5-0-26-5 28-Feb-10 Port-of-Spain
Suleiman Benn West Indies vs Zimbabwe 4-2-6-4 28-Feb-10 Port-of-Spain

With no bowler from India, Australia or England yet in that list, we can expect lots of changes in that record list. T20 is still a very new format of cricket, and at the end of the India vs England match yesterday, only 272 T20I have been played yet. So it won’t be surprising if the above record is broken soon enough.
