Blog: Can Liverpool Reach the Top Four This Season?

The big question for all the  Anfield faithfuls this season, around this planet, is the title of this blog. Will Liverpool FC find itself inside the top four spots at the end of season 2011/12?

Till now, Liverpool have only been involved in two major tournaments i.e. Barclays Premier League and Carling Cup. It is actually very weird to not see Liverpool play in Europe, but towards the end of an arduous season, this could be a decisive factor in terms of their ranking in the league table.

They have had a steady progress in Carling Cup beating Exeter City, Brighton and Stoke City. Most of the time Liverpool were comfortable but the real test comes in the form of Chelsea whom they play on 29 Nov 11.

Now lets get back our focus to the real deal which is the English Premier League. 13 matches played, 6 wins, 5 draws and 2 losses summarize their season till now. Interesting point is that Liverpool have drawn five of their matches at home and none while playing away. The amount of draws are very uncomfortable to any Liverpool supporters as it reminds them of the 2008 -09 season, where they came second in the league behind Manchester United. And it was due to the fact that Liverpool had drawn too many matches, both home and away. But that was in the past and its best forgotten.

Liverpool has a revamped squad this season, with several of the new signings making the core of the team. Now they have not lost in last eight of their EPL fixtures. The last loss was against Spurs, a horrible loss that, Spurs battering the Anfield side 4-0 at White Hart Lane.

But there is an improvement for everyone to see in the last couple of matches, maybe not so much in the results but in their performance overall. Two disappointing draws against Norwich and Swansea are hard to swallow but the mettle they showed against Chelsea and league leaders Manchester City was laudable. Defeated Chelsea with a certain panache and took Manchester City to cleaners, almost. If it wasn’t for Joe Hart, the scoreline would have been way more different than that pale 1-1 draw it read after the end of 90 minutes.

Combinations have now started to work for Kenny Dalglish with both Charlie Adam and Lucas Leiva providing absolute no nonsense stuff in the middle of the ground. Wingers are doing their job with Maxi, Bellamy, Downing all doing their job when required. Andy Carroll may not have started much but is starting to get in to the groove of Pass & Move.

And the most promising factor is the defending. Agger, Skrtel, Johnson, Enrique along with other players have been gods at defending any attack. The best defence overall in the Premier League till now this season.

So, the signs are their and the points are their for the taking. Liverpool will have only themselves to blame if they don’t take advantage of this form and better it with games to come.
