Porto boss Vitor Pereira today admitted Tottenham want Joao Moutinho but insisted the White Hart Lane club will have to pay £31.5million to land the midfielder.
New Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas wants to build his Tottenham side around the Portugal international and will fund the transfer with the sale of Luka Modric.
The fee would be nearly double Spurs’ transfer record of £16.5m for Modric in 2008 and the Croat could hold the key to the Moutinho deal going through.
Spurs would fund the move with the money which comes in for Modric if he completes his likely switch to Real Madrid.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would prefer not to pay more than £25m for Moutinho, 25, who has a £31.5m release clause in his contract.

But to get the services of Moutinho, Spurs would have to pay in excess of £25 million and it could only happen if the Modric to Madrid deal goes through.
Moutinho had a stupendous outing at the recently completed Euros in Poland and Ukraine. He was phenomenal in Portugal’s stylish brand of football and it has attracted big clubs towards him. Manchester United are also one of the clubs willing to take Moutinho but his price tag may discourage Sir Alex Feguson to buy him.
