Well, at one point of time even the Portuguese manager Paulo Bento might have thought that the match was already won by the Israeli side. But it wasn’t to be. The hosts Israel looked devastated after the match, that could have easily been won.
Just 2 minutes after the starting whistle blew, Bruno Alves scored a bullet goal for Portugal. But they didn’t have a clue about an Israeli comeback. Israeli striker Hemed scored a brilliant one for the hosts securing an equalizer. The Portuguese defence squandered even more, although having exemplary full backs like Bruno Alves and their ‘hulk’ Pepe. Even goalkeeper Rui Patricio was in no way able to save not one but the second goal too in the first half. Ben Basat who had assisted the first goal scored the second one himself.
Carlos Martins almost got it for Portugal but he just did not keep his tactic intact while scoring. Paulo Bento did have a lot of complaining to do as he could not bear his 7th ranked international team being defeated by a 74th ranked team.
The playmakers were Cristiano Ronaldo, Coentrao and Moutinho. They did look for an encouraging start in the second half when the whites turned a lot more confident with a one goal lead. Their 2 top strikers were no doubt in their pristine form.
In the 70th minute Gershon scored a goal making a resounding impact on the scoreboard as then, it read 3-1 in complete favour of Israel.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Helder Prostiga did try to put the ball in quite a few times after showing some great passing skills but they succeeded only once as Prostiga scored in the 72nd minute just two minutes after they had conceded. The credit is shared by the Real Madrid star as his pass was just outstanding.
With patience and sheer will power, Portugal tried to net the ball in many times but failed continuously.
Prostiga was not in his prime and usual quick form. The scoreboard was in favour of Israel not only due to the strikers but also due to the emphatic defence of particularily 2 players namely Ben Haim and Tibi.
The Israelis had a one goal lead going into injury time but it was during the 93rd minute that Fabio Coentrao safely scored a goal guaranteeing Portugal atleast one point . When Ronaldo was caught offside, the refree blew the final whistle as the scoreboard read 3-3.
Now, with a fortunate one point , Portugal will face Azerbaijan in their next fixture.
