After a woeful history of consistent FA Cup crashes, Newcastle United took a step towards keeping fans’ hopes alive after a decisive 3-1 victory against Birmingham City at St. James’ Park last night.
Matt Ritchie’s wonderful brace and Yoan Gouffran’s stunner cemented a much-needed win, as David Cotterill could only manage a consolation for Birmingham City.
Apart from the refreshingly reignited attitude, what stood out for the Geordies was Jonjo Shelvey’s inspiring vision and play-making ability. The number 12 midfielder made a memorable comeback from his 5 match-ban and showed that the break had taken no toll on his reputation as a game changer.
Apart from firing long range shots to test the keeper, Jonjo stole the show as he fed a beautifully weighted pass for Gouffran, who won the penalty which was converted by Matt Ritchie for Newcastle’s 1st goal on the night.
