Newcastle United returned to the top of the Championship table with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Rotherham United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
Despite missing first choice strikers In Dwight Gayle and Alexander Mitrovic, the Magpies made light work of their opponents as goals from Daryl Murphy, Matt Ritchie(two) and Ayoze Perez saw them run riot at home.
The comfortable victory aside, it could very well have been a different story for Newcastle had Rotherham opened the scoring courtesy of a fumble from Karl Darlow early in the match.
The Newcastle custodian did recover in time to deny Jerry Yates from scoring a certain goal. But while Darlow’s ‘zero to hero’ moment rightly garnered all attention, another particular aspect of the incident that many missed involved DeAndre Yedlin with the defender showing incredible pace while sprinting back to help out his goalie.
That searing pace proved useful later again as Yedlin laid down two of his team’s goals on the night.
