“Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics.” Benjamin Disraeli clearly had little regard for numbers and projections, so it’s safe to say that he would probably not be a fan of modern football and the obsession with stats.
We’ve progressed from merely goals and appearances to more in-depth analysis of performance markers like distance run, key passes, chances created and so on. However, they do prove illuminating more often than not, and this latest stat might actually be the most definitive way of showing exactly who is England’s best team.
In a table compiling data beginning from the start of last season, Tottenham have topped the table with an impressive 147 points which is 15 clear of the next best side in Manchester City. They also outscored the other top sides in the Premier League while conceding the fewest goals as well – and what makes their points tally even more impressive is that the gap between 2nd place and 5th is just a single point.
While this may not have much bearing in terms of the real standings, it’s certainly indicative of just how good the London side have been over the last two years – and they would love to validate their performances on paper with some silverware come the end of the season.
