Chile hobbled their way to the last four as a tame 1-1 draw with Australia was enough seal their progress. The reigning Copa America champions next play European champions Portugal in Kazan on Wednesday, aiming for their third major final in as many years.
Chile though, disappointed in their showings against the Asian outfit as they were made to slog by a determined and spirited Socceroos. In what was quite a cagey affair, the Alexis Sanchez scampering down the left wing to lay an inviting cross to Eduardo Vargas was one of the highlights.
The Arsenal ace charged down the left flank, fending off a challenge from an Australian defender, and then laid a pin-point cross to Vargas who could only head it agonizingly wide. With Chile having equalised just moments earlier, it was a great opportunity for Jose Antonio Pizzi’s side to snatch a lead in a game where they were largely second best, but were only left to rue the missed chance.
Perhaps, the profligacy just summed up Chile’s mediocre evening, but Arsenal fans must take note of this piece of brilliance from their talismanic striker, who has been one of the more consistent players in the squad ever since his move to North London.
