With the spotlight being on Maurizio Sarri’s appointment as new Chelsea manager, the homecoming of Blues’ legend and fellow Italian Gianfranco Zola went a bit under the radar.
The 52-year-old Zola, whose stunning performances on the pitch and affable personality off it helped him achieve cult status at Stamford Bridge, was brought in as Sarri’s number two at the start of the season.
The former striker signed for Chelsea in 1996 and such was his impact, that upon his departure seven years later, Zola was voted as Chelsea’s greatest ever player by supporters.
A month into the new Premier League campaign, Zola’s new role at Stamford Bridge as the manager’s deputy has got off to a good start as the Blues have won their opening four matches and are leading the table along with Liverpool and Watford.
During their 2-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday, the much loved Italian was spotted passionately celebrating one of the Blues’ goals.
