Wales started off their UEFA Nations League campaign in spectacular fashion as they brushed aside the Republic Of Ireland last night. The home crowd in the Cardiff City stadium were treated to some fantastic football as the hosts ended up winning 4-1 in what was Ryan Giggs’ first competitive match in charge of the side.
It was clear from the team sheet that Giggs wanted to put his own mark on the Welsh side with veterans like Chris Gunter and Andy King making way for the likes of 22-year-old Swansea defender Connor Roberts and 17-year-old Chelsea midfielder Ethan Ampadu.
While the young guns certainly provided the energy, it was the old guard that arguably stood out with Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey both getting on the score-sheet courtesy of 2 fantastic finishes.
However, many people missed a spectacular moment from another one of Wales’ most consistent performers over the last 5 years – Tottenham full-back Ben Davies.
Davies set up Gareth Bale’s goal with a brilliant 60 yard cross-field pass. The full-back who was making his 40th appearance for the senior Welsh side, got his head down and pinged an inch perfect ball straight to Bale to put him through on goal. Check it out below –
With Danny Rose seemingly having mended his relationship with Marucio Pochettino, Davies might have a real fight on his hands this season to make the left-back spot his own back at Tottenham. Davies will certainly hope Pochettino was paying attention to his display against the Republic of Ireland last night.
