Liverpool fired a warning shot to the rest of the Premier League with their performance at Wembley yesterday. They overcame Spurs 2-1 in the end but could have won by a much bigger margin had they been more clinical in front of goal.
Liverpool were solid as a defensive unit and as we have come to expect, their front 3 of Salah, Mane and Firmino were a constant threat going forward. Overall, the Reds put in a really accomplished performance that would have certainly pleased their fans.
Given the performance and result, you would expect all the Liverpool players to be universally lauded both by the mainstream media as well as fans online but, surprisingly that has not quite been the case.
It appears Sadio Mane was forced to delete an Instagram post about the game, after an army of trolls descended upon his account. The Senegalese forward had numerous nasty insults thrown his way as several people berated his performance. The Senegalese striker who had a major hand in creating Liverpool’s all important second goal, was accused of being selfish.
It appears that most of the trolls were Egyptian accounts who felt that Mane simply refused to pass the ball to Salah. It is well known that Salah has a huge legion of fans and almost a god-like status back in his home country. Liverpool fans online were perplexed that Mane had to deal with so much nasty criticism after a game which the team had actually won.
As mind boggling as this whole episode is, perhaps these kinds of incidents are an inevitable consequence of the social media era where celebrities are often unfairly picked on. Footballers who are on social media certainly aren’t immune to this kind of trolling.
However, one thing is for certain – Liverpool fans certainly appreciated Mane’s performance yesterday and this kind of trolling wont affect their perception of the Senegalese forward.
