After spending a lot of money in the summer, bringing in stars like Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko and several others, Hammers fans were really optimistic about this season’s prospects. However, manager Manuel Pellegrini has struggled to get the best out of what is clearly a talented squad, as West Ham languished at the bottom of the table going into the game against Everton yesterday, with four defeats from four.
So the Chilean decided to change things up and give a rare start to 19-year-old Declan Rice in midfield along with Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang. The change certainly worked as West Ham managed to win the midfield battle at Goodison Park and came out 3-1 winners courtesy of two goals from Yarmolenko and one goal from Arnautovic. Declan Rice worked his socks off throughout the game and hardly put a foot wrong. The highly rated youngster has been part of West Ham’s academy since he was 14 years of age and is West Ham through & through.
Rice showed just how much the club means to him after West Ham scored their third goal to kill off the game. As all the West Ham players were celebrating with Arnautovic, Rice turned to the West Ham fans in the corner and proudly thumped the badge, clearly both proud and relieved from the result.

Based on the performance and result, Rice could be just the man to turn the Hammers’ fortunes around this season after a poor start. The 19-year-old who has already made his international debut for Ireland is apparently contemplating whether to switch allegiance to England after the Three Lions contacted him about a possible call-up. West Ham fans will certainly be hoping this is the season Rice explodes on to the big stage.
