One of the catalysts of Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season has been the flourishing partnership between their two centre-backs, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
While their composure and massive physical presence – both are well over six feet tall – at the heart of defence has contributed to Reds only conceding three times in seven league matches, the pair’s impressive speed has also helped them make some surging runs in the opposition’s half.
Their defensive abilities were on full display during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night. Even though super-sub Daniel Sturridge deservingly walked away with all the plaudits for his stunning equalizer, Van Dijk and Gomez kept the Blues’ much vaunted attack at bay for much of the 90 minutes.
The duo’s speed off the ball was also on full display when they both hared back – Van Djik sprinting all the way from the host’s half – to brilliantly deny Willian a chance to go one-on-one against the keeper.
Check out their sheer pace that left the Liverpool fans in awe:
That was great defending by Gomez and Van Dijk.
What a CB partnership we've got pic.twitter.com/0fppiAqrTy

We might have the 2 quickest centre backs in the league. Willian clean through on goal? No problem, Gomez and Van Dijk catch up with him and make a clean tackle. #LFC

Vandijk was the MOTM by far. Absolute madman. Best in the league. The way he he chased down Willian who was ahead of him, and actually successfully chased him down was superb. Gomez too. Both showed amazing athletism and speed, strong tackles and were dominant. https://t.co/4x8VHyUAkD

Loved the moment where it looked like Willian was away but both Gomez and Van Dijk showed sheer pace to get back and clear the ball. That recovery pace is absolutely vital with the way we play.
