Xherdan Shaqiri pulled the strings from midfield as Liverpool got back to winning ways in the Champions League with a 4-0 demolition of Red Star Belgrade.
The Swiss international is proving to be a bargain for the Reds, who bought him from Stoke City for a measly £13 million in the summer transfer window.
Following his perfectly weighted assist for Mohamed Salah’s decisive goal against Huddersfield Town last weekend, the 27-year-old was once again at his creative best last night while also displaying excellent work-rate off the ball.
Apart from providing another exquisite assist to Salah for the team’s second, Shaq’s role in the opener was one of the highlights of the game as he tracked back to win possession before his perfectly weighted pass found Andrew Robertson, who crossed for Roberto Firmino to slot in.
The diminutive Swiss’ classy performance was certainly appreciated by the Anfield crowd as he got a standing ovation from them when he was subbed at 68 minutes.
A prolonged hug by manager Jurgen Klopp on the touchline capped off a perfect evening for Shaqiri even as the commentator announced “the Alpine Messi has shown his stuff tonight”.
Liverpool fans around the world watching the match on their telly would have absolutely love this bit from the commentator.
