While Celtic crashed to a 2-0 defeat against RB Leipzig in a Europa League encounter held in Berlin, their supporters might have won over a lot of Germany football fans last night by unfurling a banner reading ‘F**k Red Bull’ during the game.
Bundesliga runners up in 2016-17 – their first season in the top flight – Leipzig have become the most hated team in Germany due to commercial marketing strategy employed by them since being bought by Austrian energy drink manufacturer Red Bull in 2009.
Until then, it was a fifth-division club called SSV Markranstadt which very few people had heard about.
But the new owners changed its name, crest and kit, and brought in huge money to quickly propel it into the big league.
For those reasons, Leipzig’s games over the past few years have been dogged by boycotts and protests by opposing fans; so suffice to say that the anti-Red Bull banner unfurled by the Hoops fans will be appreciated by a lot of people in Germany.
