Divock Origi capitalized on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s huge blunder to score late in injury time and clinch the season’s first Merseyside derby 1-0 in favor of Liverpool.
While it was an action-packed game, the ball just refused to go inside either net due to a combination of luck and some really good saves by both the goalkeepers.
When Virgil van Dijk miscued a volley deep in injury time, the game still looked destined for a draw until Pickford’s gaffe saw the ball bounce twice on the bar before falling to Origi, who was at the right place at the right time to head home the winner and send the Anfield crowd into a frenzy.
After the final whistle blew, Jurgen Klopp and his men congratulated each other warmly while also applauding their supporters.
As the players walked into the dressing room, regular captain Jordan Henderson—not participating in the match after picking up a red card last weekend—was spotted hugging stand-in skipper Van Dijk before going on to give him a back massage, perhaps appreciating his sloppy volley which resulted in the goal.
