Liverpool’s inspirational defender Virgil van Dijk was in the thick of things during his side’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Napoli last night at Anfield.
The Dutch centre-back put in his usual imperious display, giving no chance to opposition strikers by cutting out dangerous aerial crosses as well as making several important interventions and tackles to help the Reds keep another clean sheet.
However, Van Dijk’s night was marred a bit when one of his tackles earned him a yellow card from the referee.
In an attempt to stop Dries Mertens from going clear, the 27-year-old slid in with a thumping challenge and clearly won the ball before his studs thudded in the Belgium forward’s ankle.
While the booking means he’ll be suspended for the first leg of the Merseyside club’s last 16 tie, fans would be quite pleased that their leading defender’s efforts on the night.
Van Dijk has quickly become a leader in the team after his arrival last year, and his passionate reaction at full-time perfectly captures his ability to inspire.
