With 88 minutes on the clock and you are desperately looking for a goal which could very well send your team through to the next stages of a prestigious cup tournament, only for the sprinklers on the pitch to go off and eat valuable minutes of the game.
Nope, this is not fiction, the incident really happened during the Copa Sudamericana clash between Emelec (Ecuador) and Union de Santa Fe (Argentina) yesterday.
Union de Santa Fe secured their spot into the next stage of the second most popular CONMEBOL competition (first being the Libertadores) with a 2-1 win against Emelec.
The Argentinian outfit secured their spot due to the away goal rule after the Ecuadorian club had won the first leg 1-0.
With tensions running high towards the dying minutes of the game, the universe decided to have some fun at the expense of Emelec players as the sprinklers went off at Estadio Banco del Pacífico Capwell.
Check out a video of the incident below –
With Union Santa Fe wasting time as much as possible and Emelec chasing an equalizer, much to Emelec’s dismay the water sprinklers are summoned to waste time further. Peak South American football this 😂#Sudamericana pic.twitter.com/74JyucpLkY
