Brest goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur almost scored one of the craziest own goals of all time in their Ligue 1 encounter with OGC Nice.
Two first half goals from Steve Mounie and Franck Honorat secured three points for Brest in a 2-0 win, but things could have ended differently if the Brest goalkeeper had put the ball into his own net in such ridiculous fashion to say the least.
Already up two goals on the night, the Brest goalkeeper was under pressure from Nice forwards while trying to play the ball out of his penalty area.
When Larsonneur attempted to clear the ball, he failed to make the correct connection with it due to a heavy touch beforehand. The ball crashed against the crossbar and then the right goal post but somehow, it miraculously stayed out of the goal and eventually came back to his hands.
A thankful Larsonneur was visibly relieved to say the least, as he saw the funny side of the incident and cracked an uneasy smile. The Brest goalkeeper held on the ball for a period of time before letting go of it.
The result of the game could well have been different if the ball had gone in off the post, meaning Nice would have been right back in the game with only a one goal deficit to overcome.
But shot stopper Larsonneur indeed got away after playing with fire as he eventually succeeded in keeping his sheet clean on the night, as Brest snuffed out all of their opponents’ attempts at goal to secure the three points to strengthen their position in the middle of the French top division standings.
Brest are currently 10th with 27 points, while their opponents Nice are in 13th position with 22 points (Soccerway).
Ligue 1 isn’t a farmer’s league but look at this hilarity from Brest goalkeeper Larsonneur. (The replay is even better.) And still they’re beating Nice 2-0! Saliba not having a great debut. #SB29OGCN pic.twitter.com/kBulozOoOi— Benjamin Ramm (@BenjaminRamm) January 6, 2021
