The ‘magic of the cup’ was in full display as the Copa Del Rey cropped up with another upset recently when Segunda Division B side UE Cornella beat La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid against all odds in what is known as the Spanish cup competition.
The underdogs who belong to the third division of Spanish football pulled off an incredible upset as they defeated the La Liga table-toppers 1-0 in this round of the Copa Del Rey.
An early goal from Adrian Jiménez proved to be the match winner for Cornella, as Atlético Madrid couldn’t their opponent’s defence on the night despite having the lion’s share of possession.
It was mainly a second string Atlético side fielded by Diego Simeone, but the squad rotation tactic backfired as they were sent crashing out of the cup competition in the most unpredictable manner.
The home side were by far the better team and could have won the tie by a bigger margin had they taken the chances that they got. Los Rojiblancos were reduced to ten men when right back Ricard Sánchez got sent off for a second bookable offence.
Atlético failed to have an attempt on target as they succumbed to the medicine that they usually dish out to others, losing the game 1-0 to crash out of the second round.
It was a night that called for immense celebration for the third division side, but as there were no fans on the ground due to the ongoing pandemic, the players went to a fence and celebrated (scroll down to see video below) with people at the shopping centre near their home stadium.
Cornella would have to halt their celebrations though as they meet Gimnastic Tarragona on the road on Sunday in the Segunda Division B, while Atletico Madrid would want to brush off the loss as a minor blip as they face Athletic Bilbao in the La Liga on Saturday.
It was a night that would live long in the history of the club and in the memories of the fans, as they pulled off a victory when all odds were stacked against them.
Big shock in Spain. Cornellà, a regional 3rd tier side from Barcelona, knock La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid out of the cup. Cornella’s ground is the tiny one by Espanyol.
