It was a chilly evening at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea overcame rough conditions to emerge victorious over Championship side Luton Town.
The match ended 3-1 in the Blues’ favour – with Tammy Abraham scoring three to take the match ball home – but there could have been a fourth goal scored for the home team if it was not for Timo Werner’s penalty miss.
The failed attempt left the German visibly frustrated with himself, proving to be a really unfortunate sight with the context being his poor form.
Werner delivered a decent performance from an overall aspect in Chelsea’s fourth round game, as he recorded the assist for strike partner Abraham’s first goal early on.
It was late in the game when Werner was put through on goal by Mateo Kovacic, and was about to pull the trigger when he was brought down by the Luton goalscorer Jordan Clark.
Werner elected himself to take the spot kick to make it four, but his poorly placed attempt at a penalty was brushed aside by Luton goalkeeper Simon Sluga.
Werner’s reaction to the miss was a truly heartbreaking sight, as the misfiring 24-year-old was left visibly frustrated. The German forward cut a lonely figure on the snowy pitch as he pulled his shirt over his face, almost looking like he wanted the face of the earth to open up and swallow him whole.
Werner has scored only four goals in the league since moving from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window, as his under-fire manager Frank Lampard will want the marquee forward to find his goal scoring boots sooner rather than later.
