Twitter hails Luke Shaw impact as he runs Joao Cancelo ‘ragged’ during Manchester derby

Manchester United emerged 2-0 winners in last night’s Manchester derby against their rivals Manchester City, to massively boost their top-four credentials this season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were helped by an early Bruno Fernandes penalty, as they were handed the platform to sit back and wait for the counter to try and score a second. United did just that in the second half when Luke Shaw cropped up with the second goal to send United two to the good.

United eventually held on for the valuable three points on the night, and though it was a complete performance from the team – Shaw was singled out on Twitter as the extraordinary performer on the night, as he made light work of one of the best fullbacks in the league in Joao Cancelo.

Shaw proved to be an excellent outlet for United to pass the ball out when being pressed by City, as he was too quick to deal with for Joao Cancelo – a player who has revolutionised the right-back position this season under Pep Guardiola.

Shaw had an early attempt saved by Ederson Moraes but eventually did get on the scoresheet in the 50th minute when he led the charge downfield for United to feed Rashford – who returned the ball for Shaw to finish with ice-cold precision. The English fullback completely ran Cancelo ragged for the passage of play leading up to the goal, and his dominance was proven when Pep Guardiola took Cancelo off only ten minutes later.

The more attack-minded Cancelo was replaced by Kyle Walker to counter Shaw’s attacking threat on the night, but United held on to their lead until full time. T

witter hailed Shaw’s impact for his team on the night, as jubilant United fans boasted that he showed Cancelo just the level required to excel in one of the biggest games in the country’s football calendar.

It would go down as a night that Cancelo would look back very fondly at, but Luke Shaw made sure that United did get the three points and in turn, boosted their chances of finishing in the top four.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Luke Shaw’s display against Cancelo in the Manchester derby –
