Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to be a man on a mission when Manchester United went into last night’s derby against Manchester City. It was only in January that United sat on top of the table above their rivals City after a good run of results, but a slump in their form ever since ensured that City extended their lead to a comfortable fourteen points at the summit.
Solskjaer had won the two of his other league outings at the Etihad Stadium and was hoping to repeat the heroics for a third time on the bounce when he greeted Pep Guardiola on the touchline before the game. Solskjaer’s body language spelt out loud that Manchester United would try their best to pull off an upset against the odds – and that is exactly what they did with a 2-0 win on the night.
Eagle-eyed members of the global Manchester United fanbase on social media noticed the head coach’s body language ahead of last night’s outing. Solskjaer greeted his opposite number with a warm smile as is usual from the Norwegian, but his smile turned into a look of focused determination the very moment Guardiola turned his back to greet the away team’s staff.
The clipping of Solskjaer’s contrasting immediate reaction went viral online, as United fans reckoned Solskjaer looked like a man determined to do whatever it takes to win and take the three valuable points on enemy territory. His team showed up to the occasion to do exactly that – an early strike from Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot and a second goal from Luke Shaw ensured that United won at the Etihad for three seasons on the trot.
