Alexi Lalas Receives Rare Praise From Thierry Henry On Live TV

The United States of America may not be the biggest purporters of football in the world. However, that has not stopped them from occupying a position in the sport’s global zeitgeist.

Be it through media outlets such as ESPN or legendary players such as Clint Dempsey. Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup is merely a seal of approval of America’s cultural pull.

Arguably the leading American voice of football over the past decade has been Alexi Lalas. And rarely for the best reasons. The tall defender had a largely unremarkable club playing career.

The same could not be said about his iconic long hair and beard, and he did end up earning 96 international caps. Yet, Lalas’ true claim to fame came post his playing days.

Working with ESPN and then Fox Sports, Lalas quickly garnered a reputation as one of the most outspoken pundits on TV.

His polarising takes frequently went viral online, with Lalas claiming he enjoys being provocative.

Lalas’ opinions on the 2026 World Cup were no different. He became one of the few pundits to defend FIFA’s hydration breaks in the run up to the tournament.

Lalas then outdid himself by labelling Donald Trump the ‘soccer President’, and toed the line when discussing visa issues that have plagued the event.

Regardless, Lalas was appointed by Fox in their official World Cup panel, set to share the screen with the likes of Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

He did not take long to give them a taste of what to expect.

When asked about late night presenter and Fox presenter for the World Cup James Corden, Lalas used some choice curse words on live television that left Henry flabbergasted.

The incident made what was to follow all the more surprising.

For all the controversial mileage Lalas has clocked over the years, there is little that could redeem him.

Yet, the ever-generous Thierry Henry ensured that he came as close to it as possible. He ensured the 56-year-old American pundit finally has his moment in the sun for the right reasons.

In a Fox studio segment after USA’s curtain raiser against Paraguay in Los Angeles, Henry took a deliberate moment to speak about Lalas.

The hosts ended up 4-1 winners, but it was an occurrence before the game began that struck the Frenchman’s heart chords.

“The national anthem was outstanding, the fans were outstanding… But one thing that was as good as the performance that moved me was this man,” Henry said while turning to Lalas.

“When I looked at you during the national anthem, how you cried and how passionate you were… I realized how important it is for you guys. That was actually outstanding, I will always remember that,” the legendary striker added.

Perhaps an even bigger compliment followed for Lalas when Ibrahimovic claimed he got emotional too, a rare occurrence by his own admittance.

Lalas appeared genuinely stirred by the duo’s words as he broke into a wide smile. He humbly offered thanks in what is bound to be the most positive moment Lalas has experienced on air.

The 2026 World Cup has proven that Americans may not be the best spokespersons for football. However, when it comes to patriotism, they are second to none.
