Verdict – This Retro Puma x New Zealand Kit Is a Pure Mood

Football Kits, New Zealand National Football Team, Puma

As the New Zealand team took to the pitch against rivals Australia, the “All Whites” as they are affectionately known throughout history, wore a shirt commemorating the island-nation’s historic 1982 World Cup campaign.

Although the first leg against their neighbour “Socceroos,” ended in a 1-0 defeat for them, their retro jersey, devised by Puma in association with New Zealand football, was the eventual highlight of the evening.

The jersey will undoubtedly elicit praise and fanfare when the All Whites come home to the Go Media Stadium in Auckland for the second leg against their arch rivals. New Zealand, an island-nation known worldwide for its excellence in Rugby, has a storied history in football.

Puma inculcated Kiwi culture and history to deliver a jersey steeped in history.

“The white home strip features subtle pinstripes across the body, balanced with black trim on the collar, sleeves and cuffs. On the chest, the iconic silver fern badge stands opposite PUMA’s branding, while the word Aotearoa is printed proudly beneath the back collar – a small detail carrying big meaning.”

The jersey, originally released as fans-only in March 2025, was sold out within the day it arrived on the online store. However, the men’s national team donning the jersey puts a lens on the legacy of New Zealand’s iconic World Cup debut.

New Zealand, playing in Oceania, is leading its World Cup qualification table, and the retro kit, imbued with the legacy of the All Whites’ first-ever appearance in the biggest sporting event in the world, acts as a metaphorical bridge between two generations. Although a small nation, New Zealand has been represented by players in the Premier League, with the best names being former West Ham defender Winston Reid and current Nottingham Forest striker sensation Chris Wood. Wood’s impact as one of the highest scoring strikers in his tenure at Forest has opened up avenues for New Zealand football and made them a serious name on the discussion table, with future New Zealand prospects keen on following Wood’s footsteps.

The 1982 New Zealand team qualified ahead of Australia in a shocking turn of events. Although put in an unfavourable group alongside Brazil, Scotland and the erstwhile USSR, the “All Whites”, named after their iconic all-white kits, crafted a story worth telling generations.

The island-nation’s greatest World Cup campaign came in South Africa in 2010, where they went undefeated in the group stage, drawing against Slovakia, Paraguyay and, surprisingly, the powerhouse Italy. They didn’t advance into the next rounds, but finished 3rd in the group, above a dismal underperforming Italy, who, contrary to expectations, finished last. Italy’s tragic World Cup campaign is another interesting story for a different day.

New Zealand have always been the perennial underdogs, always under the shadow of big brother Socceroos, but if Puma’s latest vintage aesthetic is anything to go by, they might be on the way to international fame quite soon.
