Electronic Arts has once again stirred the pot of anticipation among its vast community of football gaming fans. Invitations for a mysterious playtest have landed in the inboxes of selected gamers, fueling speculation amongst the community. According to the invite, the Playtest dates are between November 12 2025 – November 18 2025. Requiring an in internet connection and a new generation console to participate. EA have stated that “This is an early look at a new FC experience, focused on testing a range of exciting features for release in future FC titles. This is a technical playtest with pre-release software.”
EA regularly conducts playtests to gather crucial player feedback on titles still in development, but the vague nature of this particular invitation has sparked greater intrigue. With FC 26 having launched just one month ago and still around 9-10 months for the next game cycle many theories have circulated amongst fans.
The most prominent theory swirling around forums and social media is that this playtest is for the rumored Open World mode. Leaks and chatter have long suggested that EA is working on an ambitious, open world social hub. Fans speculate this mode could potentially integrate elements of the previous VOLTA Football mode into a large, persistent world where players can use their custom avatars to explore, partake in street football pick up games, and socialize. The notion of a shared, dynamic football world has generated massive excitement as it would be a first for the franchise. Similar to NBA 2K’s MyPark, where players could interact in a shared social environment. This would represent a dramatic departure from traditional football game structure and could add a new dimension to the franchise. EA have talked about this before 1 year ago in a keynote.

Another theory points towards the FIFA World Cup 2026. Many fans believe EA is testing a comprehensive World Cup mode that could be integrated into FC 26. Leaks have suggested that EA is actively pursuing licensing for the tournament after their fallout with FIFA, which would include a dedicated game mode with enhanced collaboration with Football Ultimate Team. This theory gained traction after community speculation about why EA would conduct a separate playtest rather than including World Cup features in the standard closed beta.
Career Mode enthusiasts are hoping the playtest involves revolutionary changes to the beloved single player experience. The community has long requested features like youth leagues, trophy museums, more realistic player development systems, and expanded coaching staff roles with detailed financial management. Some fans have pointed to EA’s introduction of Manager Live Challenges in FC 26 as evidence that the company is committed to evolving Career Mode. The mysterious playtest could be testing even more ambitious features that weren’t ready for the main game’s launch. After seeing the release of FM 26 and the rising contrast between casual and competitive playes in ultimate mode, maybe this could be a way of ensuring that FC 26 players don’t start migrating to FM.

Given EA’s emphasis on using machine learning to improve goalkeeper positioning and decision making in FC 26, some fans believe the playtest could involve next generation AI features. This might include more intelligent teammate runs, sophisticated defensive formations that adapt in real time, or even AI powered opponents that learn from your playing style.
The response to the mysterious playtest invitation has been mixed, with fans expressing excitement about EA taking risks and potentially introducing game changing features. With there being lots of negativity around the open world mode, due to the current game already having many issues and believe a newer mode will drastically increase file size and creating more issues affecting other core modes. Football fans worldwide are holding their breath, eager for the official reveal that will confirm if the next step in EA Sports FC is as revolutionary as the community hopes.
